Bangubangu is a Bantu language spoken by about 250,000 people in the east and south of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). In particular, it is spoken in the Kabambare Territory in the south of Maniema Province, and also in Kalemie, Kongolo and Nyunzu in the northeast of Tanganyika Province.
Bangubangu is also known as Kibangubangu or Kibangobango. Bangubangu speakers call their language Kibangubangu and themselves BaBangubangu. Dialects include Bangubangu proper, Mikebwe, Kasenga, Nonda and Hombo. These dialects have a lot in common, however differ sufficiently from them to be considered separate languages.
One of the first people to document Bangubangu was A. E. Meeussen, a Belgian specialist in Bantu languages, who wrote a brief grammar of the language in 1951. Bangubangu is written with the Latin script.
